“I’m embarrassed by the whole thing,” Mr. Silver said. He added that his grandchildren, with whom he sometimes bicycles, were of the age at which they would make fun of him.

Mr. Silver, 67, said that on Thursday when he was In Puerto Rico for a legislative conference, he had gone for a run on the treadmill at his hotel gym and felt particularly good. That was when he decided to rent a bicycle and enjoy the balmy weather.

“I saw this pothole too late,” he said. “I turned the wheel to try to avoid it, and I went down on my right hand, the back of my right hand, and got a little scraped over my right eye.”

Mr. Silver said a man and a woman came to his aid. They insisted on driving him to a hospital, where he had X-rays and stitches.

Mr. Silver said that while he was not an avid bicyclist, he had ridden bicycles since he was a child. He said he kept an old three-speed English racer at his summer home in the Catskills, and that this past summer, he rode a tandem bike on Governors Island with some of his grandchildren.

Mr. Silver said he remembered his last bicycle accident vividly, when he was 17 and took a spill while riding in Orange County, where his parents had a summer home. In that case, Mr. Silver said he swerved and landed on top of a fence.

Last week’s crash, he said, was worse.

Why is this even news, and why is such a big “tsimmis” being made out of this story? People fall off bicycles every day and get injured. Enough of this story, already!

You see, everyone thought it was a pothole in NYC.

Who paid for him to go to this “Legislative Conference” in Puerto Rico? Was it the taxpayers?
