Israel – There is a new strain of rice worm some Kashrut authorities say necessitates rice be checked before cooking.

Rabbi Yoel Schwatz told Arutz Sheva the new worms were not always discernable with the human eye.
However, Rabbi Moshe Via said laboratory tests did not find any microscopic worms in the rice.
Worms, if present, will therefore be detectable with normal examination methods.
Recommended Examination Method:
Strain a liberal quantity of rice with a coarse net or kitchen strainer.
Any household strainer which the rice will not fall through is acceptable.
It is preferable the straining and examination be done on a broad, bright orange surface.
Orange is recommended because it makes it easier to discern the difference between white, brown, and black bugs.
Separate the grains that have passed through the strainer to determine if there are bugs – or remaining parts – that need to be removed.
This is a bit meshugah. If someone find “worms” of any size, shape or color in their rice, they are going to throw out the rice. Who in their right mind would spend time picking out individual worms from rice they were about to cook for their family. Sometimes these hashgacha types seem to be totally detached from reality.
i dont understand the instructions… check only what falls through….?
The Gemara says that the bugs that are nis’hava in the grain are muttar.
Seems to me every Rabbi wants his 15 minutes of fame! nothing new here, just the name of the rabbi. lol
#1 ,
You’re too spoiled. Soon you’ll see why we have dinim about this when people can’t afford to throw out food.
#2,
Because if it’s poresh, it becomes assur. As long as thd bug never leaves the rice, you may eat it, since it ‘came to be’ not through eggs (according to the science available to Chazal, which determines the din), but through ‘spontaneous generation’. If the worm leaves the rice and crawls on another surface, it is now forbidden as if it came from an egg.
Do they only show after the rice has been cooked or do have to rinse more often??
Okay, so:
No strawberries
No water
No fish
No rice
No broccoli
No problem! Most of us are overweight anyway.
If you people spent so much time watching what comes out of your mouths, we would have moschiach already!
