The accusations come after inspectors with the Weights and Measures Office checked whether 325 stations were selling fuel with octane levels as advertised.
Inspectors used portable octane testers in the field and any suspect samples were sent off to labs.
The gas stations cited are in Bergen, Camden, Gloucester and Middlesex counties.
Violators face fines and could be temporarily shut down if convicted.
State Consumer Affairs Director Thomas Calcagni says the state wants to be sure motorists are getting their money’s worth with some stations charging over $4 per gallon for premium grade gasoline.
Gas stations charged with violations of New Jersey’s Motor Fuels Act or violations of the State’s Weights and Measures Statute, include the following:

Why did you think gas is so cheap in Jersey?
Regarding gas stations in New Jersey, why does that state still prohibit motorists from pumping their own gas? Every other state permits motorists that convenience?
1, Gas is lower cost in NJ because the State Taxes are lower.
I always find CITGO and GULF sleazy looking, now I know that sleazy=Bad Gas.
I once asked a new giant Mobil station how I knew the gas was original. He told me to look for big, cheap name brand stations, they are always being monitored by competitors to catch them mixing in bad gas.
Other than Citgo the other stations are no names. Stick with the larger companies such as Exxon, Mobil, BP, Shell, Texaco etc. They have less of an incentive to cheat you. They must protect their names.
Can someone explain this to me, please, because I know very little about the retail gasoline business? Some of the stations listed in the article have the brand names of the established oil companies: Citgo, Gulf, Lukoil. So presumably they would be selling the gasoline supplied by these companies. So how can the gasoline sold by these stations be “inferior” but is ok when sold by numerous other stations with the same brand names?
Any franchise gas station which is privately owned even though they have a brand name could tamper with the gas quality to make more money (and they definitely do so) . Station like Hess which is not privately owned just have a manager who runs it has no interest in tampering with its Quality,
