The council’s Transportation Committee will consider a group of bills that would rein in biking — an activity that has greatly expanded, with controversy, under Mayor Bloomberg and Transportation Commissioner Janette Sadik-Khan.

“I get a lot of phone calls and a lot of concerns about rogue bicyclists. Too many bicyclists are going the wrong way on a one-way street. Too many of them are ignoring existing bicycle lanes and driving as they wish, and I think that we have to address that issue,” Transportation Committee Chairman James Vacca (D-Bronx) told The Post.

And while they’re at it they’ll address talking on cell phones, rolling through stop signs, double and triple parking, blocking fire lanes, blocking hydrants, etc. by drivers. I don’t know what this will accomplish because seichel will still be an eidele zach.

It’s time to mandate insurance & registration on all motorized bikes – even if its a battery-powered motor. If its used on public roads & sidewalks, it should be regulated. It if its only used “off road” for recreation is a different story.

Bicycles are also subject to the Vehicle and Traffic Law, but cyclists ignore that law with impunity.

I am fairly libertarian, but there is poetic justice here. These simple minded people who tell everybody that they should ride bicycles rather than drive cars, are overwhelmingly big-government leftists (although they are lately trying to shun that ill-reputed appellation in favor of “progressive,” well, they can run but they can’t hide, we know they are leftist), and they love intrusive laws and regulations of every kind. Well, let them experience it on their sorry selves.
