The mayor detailed new health stats on Tuesday showing babies born in the city in 2009 have a record-high life expectancy of 80.6 years. That’s an increase of 3 years since 2000 and 2½ years better than the most recently reported national average.

Bloomberg and health care officials announced the figures in a maternity ward at a Bronx hospital. They said anti-smoking initiatives and HIV prevention programs are helping city residents live longer.

The officials said drug-related deaths and the infant mortality rate also have fallen.

BALONEY! Just like there are less smokers now. Meanwhile I see more people smoking then ever. Nebech, we also hear every day of young people being niftar. Take this story with a big grain of saltz.

Lately he’s been trying so hard to credit himself for nothing, only to distract us from the blizard anniversary talk. You w’d think that’s its way too early to know whether or not people live longer due to change of quality of life he claim he brought to the city. BOGUS!

while cutting the smoking rate will make a big difference, anyone who claims to make _eighty year_ projections into the future has about as much credibility as the folk who claimed the Iraqis (and Afghans, and Vietnamese, and Cambodians, end all those others…) would welcome us with flowers and chocolate…

Next time you visit a בית העלמין, before you leave your loved ones’ graves take a little stroll around before you leave. (I know this may seem a little strange, but bear me out, please.)

Take a look at the ages inscribed on the various מצבות and you will quickly discern a trend; as the years of death progress so do the ages of the נפטרים increase. In other words, each generation lives longer than the one before.

This is not just because of the anti-smoking initiatives and HIV prevention programs mentioned in the article. We are eating better, we have improved sanitation and preventive medicine programs. All of our children are routinely vaccinated against what were once sure-fire killer diseases. Thanks to improved health and safety legislation fewer people are killed in work-related accidents.

There is also a factor so far not mentioned and that is the power of prayer. Davening regularly (or going to church frequently if that’s your faith style) seem to promote a sense of well-being and relaxation that, intangibly, add to the quality of life and therefore longer living.

Lastly, we also have some marvelous programs for geriatric care. It all helps.
