Suspicious Van Closes 82nd Street for Several Hours

The NYPD closed down 82nd Street between Fifth and Madison avenues for several hours Today December 20 2010 while they investigated a suspicious vehicle police said. Two officers saw a gray van with blankets covering up the windows on 82nd Street around 9 a.m., according to police. The officers became suspicious of the van because the back of it was dragging low to the ground, police said. Police closed 82nd Street and Fifth Avenue between 81st and 85th streets while the bomb squad investigated. The streets were reopened at about 11:50 a.m. after the bomb squad gave the all clear signal. The van is parked a half a block away from the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is closed on Mondays.
Bomb sniffing dogs were called in and members of the bomb squad opened the van around 11:30 a.m. Officers went through the contents of the van and tossed several pieces of luggage onto the street before deeming it safe to reopen the streets.
