Remains of 1500-year-old monastery uncovered in Israel

Location: Bet Shemesh, Israel
December 20, 2017

Archaeologists and workers on the mosaic floor of a 1,500 year old monastery and church from the Byzantine Period at an archaeology excavation outside Bet Shemesh, Israel, 20 December 2017. The Israeli Antiquities Authority reveals the site could have been a main pilgrimage site and is in a outstanding level of preservation including a mosaic floor with rarely found large green leaf patterns, birds and pomegranates, as well as an unusual geometric edge design. It is not known yet how large the mosaic will turn out to be as excavations continue.  EPA-EFE/JIM HOLLANDER
