Major 5 Alarm Fire in Downtown Baltimore

Location: Baltimore, Maryland
December 7, 2010

A five-alarm fire ignited on The Block in downtown Baltimore late Monday afternoon, December 6 2010 prompting evacuations and street closures, city fire officials said. East Baltimore Street remained closed between Gay and South streets early Tuesday, as well as Holliday and Commerce streets in the area. Firefighters using more than 50 pieces of equipment were called to a building on the north side of the 400 block of East Baltimore Street shortly before 4 p.m. Officials said they believe the building that ignited is Gayety Show World, a three-story building that’s one of the oldest on The Block, downtown Baltimore’s red-light district. The fire was finally brought under control by 7 p.m. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
