One week after Fallsburg approved a settlement ending condemnation proceedings against the 396-unit development, Supervisor Steve Vegliante said the town wants to hire another inspector to ensure multifamily properties are inspected every two years. .

“We recognize that a lot of camps, a lot of apartment houses are not being reviewed,” Vegliante said. “We want to make sure that they’re not unsafe — that there’s proper egress and ingress and fire protection.”

Fallsburg officials are hoping to add another deputy code enforcement officer or a building inspector within the next few months. Proposed increases in a number of permit fees could help fund the position.

Among the increases, the charge to inspect multifamily dwellings would rise to $25 from $15, with a maximum of $300. Fallsburg would also add a specific inspection charge for seasonal camps: $25 per unit, capped at $750.

The town is also proposing to inspect multifamily structures every two years instead of every 36 months. Seasonal camps would also be inspected every two years.

This is good news for the majority of camps and bungalow colonies that obey the rules. The small number of bad apples will now be monitored carefully and b’yh, shut down permanently before someone c/v is hurt or killed in a fire or accident. There is no reason not to operate in compliance with the building codes and fire safety laws.

    Great idea!
Only problem is, that they only pile fines upon you, without giving you the solutions, the`ll make you go thru every single governmetal agency, so when all is said and done you`re not left with a penny to actually fix the violations.

Better that the less wealthy folks stay in Brooklyn and save the expense of going, than be in debt and danger, G-d forbid. People have a very strong social pressure to over extend their resources to go upstate during the summer, and have difficulty during the rest of the year.
