Brooklyn, NY – The scorching heat of our New York summers has arrived. Tempteratures have climbed well into the 90s, and heat indexes have reached over the 100 degree mark. People are urged to stay indoors with air conditioning, sheltered from the sweltering streets. It is dangerous to be exposed to this heat wave! Many of our children, however, are subjected to this blistering heat for perilously long periods of time, when they are bussed back and forth to day camps. The buses can reach temperatues of over 105 degrees, without any AC to relieve our children. This is not merely a matter of comfort, but a matter of life and death importance! More people have died in U.S from heat-related illnesses, than from hurricanes, tornadoes, lightning and fires combined.

In light of this, we turn to our mosdos with a request for our childrens’ sakes. Please provide buses with bearable temperatures for our kids to ride in. Their well-being is of paramount importance and the negative statistics are staggering.

An ounce of prevention is worth more than a pound of cure, as the saying goes. Contact your schools and chederim about the dangerous rides our kids are taking.

I agree 100% that there must be a/c on school buses.
children, bus teachers, & bus dtivers are not second class citizens. if there is a/c everywere else, then it should be on school buses also.

if you have steam for the winter why not AC for summer?

its a shame that the only last place left without AC is the school bus taking the kinderlech to chaider.

why is it that when you go for approx. 2 min. ride to shul you understand that you need AC utherwise youre gonna die, stop and think for a moment about your child.

in the old days there was no such a thing as a day camp in the summer months.

so 9:34 & 10:20, what’s ur point, should there, or should’nt there be AIR CONDITION on school buses?!

is the advice how to stay cool and hydrated to be used temperarely till they get to install A/C, or indefenitly and without A/C?

If it is the latter, then why don’t you use your own advice in your home, car, store, bhmd”r, or bus, so you should not need the A/C?!
what you don’t like, don’t do to the kids!

do you all think that the time has finaly come to put AIR CONDITION in all school buses, and let the teyere yidishe shefelech also get a breath of frash air, like everyone else? or should it stay the way it is, that only adolt’s can enjoy their car and coatch bus ride, but the children should suffer (chas veshulom)?
    Ha?!

    let’s hear from you…..

the idea of a water bottle, is to sip droplets of water on your lips and in your moth, to keep the body Hydrated, and drink only when you feel thirsty.
    drinking carbonated water (soda)
or fruit juices will not quench your thirst you will only crave for more.
please inform all of the info.

7:52, Yes, I DID ride school buses to camp when I was a child 30 something years ago and my mother froze water for me which wasn’t totally defrosted at dismissal. Hydration is the key, not necessarily cold water, although it is more refreshing. Some camps do make sure kids have what to drink on the way home.

    I can’t believe this ignorance!!

The only reason you are all the side of the mosdos in not installing air condition on the buses, is because you never rode around in a school bus in the summer!

The weather doesn’t need to be 95. Even in 85, the temperature on the bus can reach up to “100”!
In average, the temperature on a bus, is between 15 to 20 hotter than on the street!

And most bus routes in willi. takes around 45 minutes to an hour. And if you catch traffic, forgetaboutit. And whatever you do without AC, is “nothing”.

And because there is less children in the city during the country months, they combine routes, and instead the routes shall take less time, it actually takes “more time”!

It’s easy for everybody to sit in an air conditioned office or home, and give advice for the kids, how to stay cool!!!

You should see how the children come down from the buses in the summer: wet, oisgeshvitst, red as tomato………….

Start talking to bus drivers, and you will start getting the unfortunate picture!

So please, start demanding from your mosdos to install air condition in “ALL” school buses!

And if they ask you for a little money to help cover the cost, please don’t delay.

It’s a big mitzve. you will help out yidishe kinderlech in their heat suffering!

Not to minimize the severity of the situation in this weather, in reality, we’re dealing with a few days each summer that are this hot. With common sense and extra precautions, we can all take care of our kinderlach, even in this weather. By now, you should know how long your child is on the bus, and if it’s too hot for that long of a run, drive him or her, or make sure the situation is bearable.

The only solution is to keep the kids home. And that’s no solution. Have the camps provide frozen water bottles so the kids can keep cool. It works.

This is a very good discussion

some families are requesting that the schools should buy air conditioned busses , yet when you tell them that it will cost them a few $$$ more a year in transportation cost …… you all know the answer ……..

which side do you believe is correct ?

In this weather, many of the day camps do what they can to minimize the children’s time in the heat. Some have even postponed their major trips this week due to the heat.
