The guidelines say teachers should reject friend requests or other contact with students on their personal accounts.

They come as school districts across the country seek to balance the risks of inappropriate contact with the academic benefits of social networking.

This month, the Department of Education will start providing training sessions for teachers in how best to use social media in the classroom.

Department officials told the Wall Street Journal (http://on.wsj.com/KAgeKb ) that the recommendations have been in the works for about six months.

Spokesman Matthew Mittenthal says there are no consequences for not abiding by the guidelines as long as other department policies about appropriate conduct are followed.

Teachers aren’t “friends”. They are TEACHERS.

Any teacher who thinks it is appropriate to let their students into their personal lives that way SHOULDN’T BE A TEACHER.

What is it with this generation? Parents are too concerned about whether their kids “like” them or not, or whether they are seen as “hip” instead of worrying about being PARENTS. Now teachers all want to be seen as “cool” too? Give me a break!

No wonder so many kids today are all self-important, entitled bums with no work ethic and no sense of responsibility to their families.

Pretty pathetic they need to make a law for what should be common sense. For years, I’ve been rejecting friend requests from students, and explaining when they ask why that it is not appropriate. I have accepted requests from alumni though- it’s different when they’re adults and out of school.

guidelines should be set for private school teachers as well. i have been added on facebook by some of my 10-year old students, boys and girls, as well as their parents. this has become really awkward, especially when the kid or parent asks why i haven’t accepted the friend add. explaining that it isn’t appropriate for students and teachers to be facebook friends just seems to make our academic relationship strained and weird. i’ve since made myself unsearchable for this reason.
