New York, NY – City to Begin Boot Program on Parking Ticket Offenders

    New York, NY – The city is planning to boot ticket scofflaws in theouter boroughs as soon as Monday, a city official confirmed Wednesday. The three- to six-month pilot program will begin in Brooklyn, then Queens and Staten Island and will be eventually rolled out citywide.

    The city marshals usually tow parking ticket offenders when they exceed $350 in fines, but they will not be participating in the boot program, citing concerns over how it will be operated, according to a representative from the city Marshals Association.

    The marshals will continue their tow program, though they will be working in different parts of the borough.

    The Bloomberg administration approved the $70 million no-bid deal with the boot’s operator, a company known as Paylock, two months ago, The News reported in April.

    Under the new plan, a city sheriff will verify that a car has more than $350 in judgements, then authorize Paylock employees to attach the wheel clamp, a.k.a. a boot. The motorist can then call a toll-free number to pay the fees over the phone. Paylock will then give a code to release the lock. Drivers can also pay in cash at designated payment centers.

    In addition to the ticket fines, a motorist will pay a $180 “boot fee,” a $70 city fee and a 5% surcharge on the total bill. There is also a fee for paying with a credit card.

    A driver who owes $355 in judgements would pay about $300 in fees — which is comparable to how much they would shell out under the current system of being towed.

    Drivers must also return the boot.

    Fantastic! It’s about time something is done about these people who blatantly park in front of hydrants, bus zones, and driveways.

    Too bad they no longer glue the stickers to your windshields when you are booted. Those were harder to remove than the boot. We need this kind of agressive parking enforcement program in willy an BP since drivers here seem to feel that it is apikorsus to park legally, assuming you could find such a space.

    Hey, it’s not just “willy and BP” try going down Flatbush Ave. on a Sunday, specifically, around Foster Ave/ Caton Ave etc.

    As others have noted previously, the double parking and illegal parking is especially bad erev shabbos and yom toivim outside the markets and mikvahs where people just leave there cars anywhere without regard to the rules. I can think of just a few mikvahs where if they were to station a fleet of tow trucks, the City could go a long way towards reducing its budget deficit while vastly improving traffic flow. Towing these cares will hopefully send a strong message to some ehrliche yidden in Brooklyn who think the laws of mikvah and taharas mishpacha take precedence over the imperative of strict obedience to dina d’malchusa (a fancy term for obeying the “King’s” parking rules on public streets).

    This program should also be applied to the hundreds of cars with “DPL” (Diplomat) license plates, which flagrantly violate the no parking laws.

    whats the difference if they boot or tow? its costing the motorist the same amount, I guess theyre being “nice” and not making you go chase your car on the other side of the moon. if you rack up that amount in fines you cant renew your registration, you will just have to pay it anyway.

    For heaven sake, where are these numbers pulled from? Since Bloomergs became Mayor the city just keeps on making up unsubstantiated fees.

    All we get is another “press confrence” from our local reps.
