Our sages are on target. Even though the sanhedrin does not exist today the four death penalties were not abolished. If one publicly violates shabbos they get skillah by falling off a roof or similar circumstance.

I think its far more appropriate, and far more demonstrative of the middah of rahamim, if we act NOT as Judge and jury, but as compassionate people who feel badly for a wife and three kids left without a husband and father. He was Reform? WHO CARES. He participated in a dangerous sport? WHO CARES. We lost a member of Klal Yisrael and the most appropriate response, especially publicly, is Baruch Dayan HaEmet. Why he died, why he died in this manner, and whether or not he kept Shabbat, are not relevant – let HKB”H decide those matters as HE sees fit so we can be menachem the aveilim Mr. Winokur left behind. Condolences to his instructor’s family as well.

There are always some on this board, who figuratively love to kick a victim, once their life has been lost. For example, they are condemning the victims for violating Shabbat, engaging in a “dangerous” sport, being Reform, etc. There are pedestrians who cross at a green light, and look for cars, but are still victims to some maniac going through the light, or not yielding the right of way, when making a turn. Should we also condemn those victims, also?

David Winoker was a real mensch, his word was like gold I’ve been working with his company Winoker Realty for long time he will be really missed. May his family see no more sorrow or pain.

Violating Shabbos is a serious offense. You can’t come to a Sanhedrin and say I give charity or do kind deeds so don’t execute me for violating Shabbos. Every criminal facing the death penalty could throw up his good deeds including nazis.
