In a radio interview held Wednesday, the rabbi said that the timing of the earthquake, as the debate over the enlistment of the haredi public to the IDF intensifies, was not a coincidence.

“The fact that the Torah and those who study it are being persecuted, that there are schisms within the Jewish nation that may create, God forbid, incitement and hate – is very serious,” the rabbi said.

“See for yourself, the (political) storm has just begun and yesterday we were told that there was an earthquake in Israel,” he added.

great, another navi. Nobody, repeat, nobody knows why things happen. and with all due respect to Rabbi Amar, he does not know either. Best for these Rabbonim to just be quiet.

ok, fine, there was an earthquake. Forget changing the law. All chareidim, back to the Beis HaMedrash. Hashem has spoken via the earthquake. No military service.

I think it happened because they are shielding Mondrowitz.

I posit that if the earthquake has anything to do with current events, it’s a sign to the Charedim that their “trembling” is wrong. They should not separate themselves from the K’hal and consider themselves above the rest, lest they suffer the same punishment as Dasan and Aviram (and perhaps Korach).

Of course the earthquake happened for completely natural reasons and there’s no real reason to believe Hashem was sending a particular message.

I think it maybe happened Because hashem wants them to earn a living unless there learning 24 hours a day non stop.

Rabbi Amar’s very peculiar avowal that “that the timing of the earthquake, as the debate over the enlistment of the haredi public to the IDF intensifies, was not a coincidence” reminds me of a British television sitcom that was popular in my early years.

The program was entitled “Dad’s Army”, and its signature tune was “Who Do You Think You Are Kidding”.

lets get real for a minute. do any of you really think that the real reason the Chareidim don’t want to serve the state is because they’re learning?
the real reason is because even the Litvishe see the state of Israel as something that came into their life without invitation. we had Frum people living in Eretz Yisroel way before the creation of the State of Israel. and the reason why we have Frum MK’s in the coalition is to be able to keep the Jewish Jew haters from enacting too many laws that will turn out to hurt our values.
and that’s also the reason why we’re taking from the State every possible program and as much money as it’s possible, because if we won’t take the money then those funds will be used to advance secular or outright anti Jewish causes.
you may hate me for what I wrote, but it’s the damn truth.
we DON’T want to serve or help in anyway the State of Israel.
let us live our life as we had for hundreds of years. a fine Jewish young guy has no business carrying a gun and learning fighting techniques. if the secular population wants to act like Goyim with the ידיים ידי עשיו then let them do it themselves.
we’re here longer than 64 years! we’re not leaving!

He’s 100% right, do you have another reason hashem made an earthquake over there, because Iran & Turkey we know why cause they are against Yiddin ,Japan cause they imprisoned the 3 bachurim, Israel has to be cause of the assault on limud hatorah if you go back in time the great earthquake in early 1800 in Israel was caused cause in 2012 bachurim will be forced to leave the beis hamedrish

Earthquakes happen along a fault zone. Science!

Earthquakes are caused when rocks underground break along a fault. This sudden release of energy causes the seismic waves that make the ground shake. When two blocks of rock or two plates are rubbing against each other, they stick a little. They don’t just slide smoothly; the rocks catch on each other. The rocks are still pushing against each other, but not moving. After a while, the rocks break because of all the pressure that’s built up. When the rocks break, the earthquake occurs. During the earthquake and afterward, the plates or blocks of rock start moving, and they continue to move until they get stuck again. The spot underground where the rock breaks is called the focus of the earthquake. The place right above the focus (on top of the ground) is called the epicenter of the earthquake.

I love hearing about people who know why the RS”O does things. Can he tell us how the market is going to perform this quarter?

It happened because the Haredim aren’t serving. G-d obviously hasn’t forgotten Torah where even the Levites picked up swords to defend Israel.

maybe the earth quake is a message to ALL sides and positions to deal honestly and rspectfully with each other.

First, Kovod ha briot and with the Almightys help we will find a fair and appropriate solution that is acceptable to all sides.

I have nothing but the greatest respect for Rav Amar and all Gedolim, but I also feel compelled to say that unless Rav Amar is in the same kind of contact that Moshe Rabbeinu had with Hashem Yisborach and knows for a fact why this earthquake happened, perhaps he should moderate his remarks by stating that this was just his opinion and remind everyone that only Hashem knows the reason for the earthquake.

The earthquake happened because of faults and plates moving underground, period. End of story.

We need leadership in Klal Yisroel and we have none. The supposed leaders are so old and so isolated that their decrees are falsified by askanim all the time. The exception is Rav Shteinman who somehow became the last man standing and thus the Gadol by default. However, those who scream the loudest about Daas Torah are the first to ignore him and call him vile names when he came out for the Nachal Chareidi. He had to retreat because of the thugs in chareidi clothing.
The status quo can’ continue and anyone with a brain knows that. Calling the chilonim dirty names won’t change their opinion. If Kadima and Likud stay together, there is little the ultra orthodox can do. The gravy train is going to come to a stop. Everyone knows this but no one has the power or the leadership to work out a workable compromise. All they can do is scream and call names. How immature and not appropriate.

We know HOW earthquakes happen, what with the plates and the crust. The Big Cheese thinks he’s a prophet all of a sudden so he took a shot at WHY.

The earthquake was a blessing. Every moderate quake of this kind releases pressure along fault lines and reduces the likelihood of a devastating quake later on. Hashem isn’t called רחמנא for nothing.

“Sephardic Chief Rabbi Rabbi Shlomo Moshe Amar on Wednesday said that Tuesday’s earthquake was caused by persecution of Hareidi men who avoid military service.”

    This is a misinterpretation.

Yes it is true that G-d sends messages to us. But it usually takes a certain kind of person who is able to interpret the significance of an event. A true Na’vi is both an interpreter of current events and a prophet of future occurrences. Maimonides in Guide for the Perplexed gives the best approximation on the subject. As he explains there are different levels of prophecy. It is only given to people who have attained a certain level of holiness through their meritorious actions. A prophet goes through various stages in his life. He will have inklings of his true purpose all throughout his life, but the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle will become clearer at certain specific times. The revelations will be intensely personal and private between G-d and himself.

Believe it or not, there are prophets alive today who can prove prophetic revelation as decribed by the Rambam.

It would have been actually impressive and maybe even made an impact on people if he would have predicted the earthquake BEFORE it happened ;). Afterwards, who cares? Anyone can make up any reason for anything.

guys like this “rabbi” never read Tanach or its commentaries, including one that said that Eliyahu ha Navi was the last person in this world who could claim that a natural phenomenon was Heavenly sent.
then again, unless someone is greasing this guy’s palm, he does not pay attention.
