New York – Consolidated Edison Inc.’s largest union has asked the New York State commission that regulates the company to end the lockout of thousands of field workers.

The Utility Workers Union of America filed a petition Wednesday with the New York Public Service Commission.
According to the Wall Street Journal (http://on.wsj.com/N7Jrxp ), it said the company wasn’t capable of providing adequate service as required by law with its smaller work force.
The company says it’s responding to all service and emergency calls.
Contract negotiations between the utility and the union stopped July 1, several hours after the existing contract expired. The company told union workers to stay home until negotiators reach an agreement.
Managers and out-of-state workers have replaced the union workers. Federal mediators were asked to intervene to get talks started again.
