Alaa Jassim works on a damaged document at the Iraq National Library and Archives in Baghdad on June 20. A trove of Jewish books and other materials rescued from a sewage-filled Baghdad basement during the 2003 invasion and now stored at the National Archives and Records Administration in College Park, Md., is now caught up in a tug-of-war between the U.S. and Iraq. KHALID MOHAMMED / APWashington – Iraq has rejected a US offer to receive half of the country’s Jewish Archives, which were removed from Iraq in 2003 following the US launch of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

The refusal appeared last month in the Iraqi newspaper al-Sabah, according to the Press TV news service.

The archives, which were discovered in the flooded basement of Iraqi intelligence headquarters in Baghdad, include Torah scrolls, and Jewish law and children’s books. Seventy percent of the collection consists of Hebrew-language documents and 25 percent is in Arabic. The rest of the documents are written in other languages.

Iraq was home to a large Jewish community prior to 1948 before most Iraqi Jews immigrated to Israel.

Last month, Iraq said it would end archaeological cooperation with the United States until the archives are returned.

“Iraq was home to a large Jewish community prior to 1948 before most Iraqi Jews immigrated to Israel.”
laughable. The Iraqi Jews suffered pogroms, public hangings, seizure of property and every imaginable form of persecution. Is that what you call migrating?

Can you also say caused that pogroms? what was behind it?

No Jewish archives should be returned to Iraq at all.

Nothing should be returned to Iraq. For all practical purposes, the country is now judenrein (cleansed of Jews). Jews are not welcome there. Iraq has never compensated the thousands of Jews, for the seizure of their property, and other assets, when they left for EY. In addition, Iraq has shown no interest in bringing to trial, those responsible for the public hangings of a number of Jews in a main square in Baghdad, in January, 1969. When there were world wide protests against that pogrom, the Iraqis called it “the barking of dogs”.
