President Barack Obama delivers remarks during the Human Rights Campaign's 15th Annual National Dinner in Washington, DC, USA, on 01 October 2011. EPAWashington – The Democratic Party is moving to include support for gay marriage in the official party platform for the first time, a Democratic official said Monday, marking a key milestone for advocates of same-sex unions.

The party’s platform drafting committee voted to include language backing gay marriage during a weekend meeting in Minneapolis, the official said. Democratic delegates will formally approve the platform during the party convention in Charlotte, N.C. in early September.

President Barack Obama will officially accept his party’s nomination at the convention, which marks the start of the fall campaign blitz. Republican rival Mitt Romney will get the GOP nomination a week earlier during his party’s convention in Tampa, Fla.

Seeking to ramp up enthusiasm among Democrats, party officials said Sunday that former President Bill Clinton will deliver the nominating speech on Wednesday night of the convention. Obama and Biden are to speak on Thursday, the convention’s final night.

Several prominent Democrats began pushing earlier this year for support of same-sex marriage to be included in the convention platform, which lists principles the party supports. The effort got a boost in May when Obama voiced his personal support for same-sex unions.

The Democratic official would not comment on the exact language of the pro-gay marriage plank approved by the drafting committee. It was unclear if the party would call for any national action to legalize gay marriage.

Obama has said he considers gay marriage to be a state issue, not a federal matter.

The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publically about the platform committee’s decision.

The move was first reported by The Washington Blade.

Any group, community or nation that legalizes same sex marriage is cutting its own spiritual throat. There is no “gay” gene. Homosexuality is a result of traumatic conditioning in early childhood and poor later life choices. People should remember that ancient Gomorrah, Athens and Rome were full of urbane, cultured and intellectual people. The USA must not go down this path.

Why is this so important right now for the Dems? Instead of the broken economy, they’re making support for gay marriage an official Democrat position?

Seems to me that this is only pandering to their very own special 1% donors. It can’t even be called pandering to the masses because every single time voters get the chance, even in California, they continue to affirm traditional marriage as defined by being between one man and one woman only.

Initially, I thought that this was going to be a close race, but the Dems keep sending these signals which indicate nothing but desperation. Maybe their internal polling really is that bad. I’m starting to think that it will be a blowout.

In a way, I should thank the Dems for this.
They may have helped me reach an easy decision.

I really don’t believe that Obama is as bad a President as many make him out to be. I actually think he’s trying his best, and many of our problems are not really his fault. I am also of the opinion that he is a dignified man. A devoted family man.

Yes, I do however think his policies are often off-base. I’m especially concerned with his policies vis-a-vis Israel.

Therefore, up until now, I was personally still undecided between him and Romney. To me, Romney is still an “unknown” entity.

But now, if the Dems officially adopt a Pro-gay platform, my decision is, more or less, made up.

I have a question for all you smart folks:

I agree 100% that this is against the Torah, and is considered immoral. However, what is your answer to the “frumme” gay crowd?

You definitely can’t force them to marry a woman, because that would be equivalent to forcing a man to marry a man.

It is clear that therapy does not work, [and that there is really no therapy for this].

So what is the Torah’s stance on this person? Stay single forever?

This is good news for the anti-Obama camp! While they’d worry that Muslim sympathizers might back Obama, worry no more! Muslims are very anti-gay marriage.

The problem is not so much that what people do in the privacy of their bedroom as much as it is about supporting an anti-Torah platform. I don’t understand how any frum Jew will be able to vote for him if this is what he stands for. I didn’t get how the religious goyim voted for him in 08, ignoring his stance on abortion. (He voted present three times, which in essence was a no vote to saving the lives of babies that survived botched abortions.) It amazes me that people will throw away their values to vote democrat, thinking they will get more services. I don’t see how according to halacha you can vote for someone who goes against Torah. They are your REPRESENTATIVES. In plain English, these are the people who are supposed to stand up for you in the government. How can you pick someone to stand up for you if their values are stated as being against yours??? Get some dignity people and vote for the person who will best represent Torah in our government.

I don’t like Romney, and he wouldn’t have been my first or even second choice. BUT, he does have values and ethics that are more in line with Torah.

Gay marriage should be such a non-issue. The orthodox Jewish vote has had the wool pulled over their eyes in recent years. It’s long been known since the days of “Zimri and Cuzbi” that the right leaning morality of a torah life is not something the world can abide by. We need to make sure we’re leading OUR lives the way the torah tells us too, but when it comes to dictating what the goyish world does? We shouldn’t be getting involved. Rather, we should keep the elected officials who do something in office so that we have a voice that carries authority and secures things for our community instead of putting these new “jewish”, yet nebbish, voices into office and risking having anything, especially in these tough economic times when Yeshivos are not being paid tuition and some kids rachmana’letzlan have to go to public school.
