New York – The NYPD has disciplined 17 employees over racist and offensive remarks on a Facebook page about revelers at last year’s West Indian American Day Parade.

The comments referred to “savages” and “animals.” One person wrote, “Let them kill each other.”
The raucous annual parade is a heavily policed event. It’s one of the city’s largest outdoors events and has been marred by violence in some years.
Three shootings were tied to the parade in 2011, and police seized 14 guns during the celebration the night before the parade.
Police spokesman Paul Browne tells The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/RFsaPj ) that among the 17 employees were four police officers who still face departmental trials on charges of “conduct prejudicial to the good order of the police department.”
So if there were racist comments why doesn’t the article post any? Judging people’s behavior as savage and animalistic and wishing them harm may be “prejudicial to the good order of the police department” but it isn’t racist. And as a victim of this parade every year, it is about behavior, not race.
They should move that parade to Manhattan (like all parades) and not keep innocent people, who’s abode surrounds the parade area, hostage for 24 hours, year in, year out.
For shame!
Honesty is obviously not the best policy. For someone who had the misfortune to see the after math of this parade, I would say that the officers in question were conservative in their descriptions.
To describe the behavior of these people is impossible; calling them animals gives the poor animals a bad name.
It’s a reflection on the NYPD to say things like this in public. The Department was right to discipline them.
If they’d said similarly nasty things about Jews everyone here would be screaming for their blood. “Anti-Semites!” and “Nazis!” would be the mildest terms.
another case of pc run amock.i the 80’s i went to seminary where this parade takes place , crown heights. i was told many times that for their own safety the yidden stay indoors the day of the parade and that there were times when mobs from the parade would run down kingston ave smashing windows.
