The national average is 15.9 percent.

The new data is set to be released Thursday.

The one percent increase in the poverty rate comes even as the city has gained back all of the jobs it lost in the recession.

A spokeswoman for Mayor Michael Bloomberg told The New York Times that the numbers “reflect a national challenge.”Samantha Levine said, “The U.S. economy has shifted and too many people are getting left behind without the skills they need to compete and succeed.”

She said that’s why the mayor believes a new approach is needed for job creation and education.

Those whose only income is Social Security may live in poverty in NY, while the same benefit may be adequate in most parts of the country. I’m certain that the elderly contribute to this high poverty rate.

If you think things are bad now, wait until Paul Ryan slashes food stamps, Medicaid and other social programs. If parents did not have more children than they could afford to raise on their own without government assistance, it would go a long way to alleviating poverty in the country.

When data on specific communities become available I suspect that Kiryas Joel and New Square will again rank very high among the poorest communities in the country. Once upon a time, Jewish mothers and fathers were proud if their sons became successful doctors or lawyers. Now many of them want their sons to be torah scholars. It is hard to earn enough to raise 6 or 8 children on what a torah scholar can earn.

this is just one of the first steps to the destruction of the USA & its government before it collapses

be prepared for all your rights & freedoms to be taken away slowly but surely-not in one shot-& soon WE will not be able to live in the USA as frum yidden. all our rights & freedoms are being taken from us one at a time & the USA is about to become what used to be communist russia

pack your bags NOW & head for Eretz Yisroel, while the pressure is not so hard & before america is attacked by iran. for then it will be too late & everyone will be leaving in poverty, wishing they had left-now-when they were told.

BOTTOM LINE:this is all the work of Hashem & the choice is yours if you wish to leave now or wait & suffer ahead C”V

i wish everyone a gmar chasima tova ahead

Benefits should go to seniors (who have worked hard and paid into the system) and the very poor. Not those who choose to live in poverty and place a burden on society as a lifestyle choice.

    You know who you are.
