“We received numerous calls of everything from boat fires, aircraft down, balls of fire, meteors, burning objects in the sky, you name it,” said David Umberger, a search and rescue controller for the Coast Guard.

The calls came from as far away as North Carolina, Umberger said. About 50 people in Normandy Beach, Ocean County, reported the phenomenon.

A search by boats and helicopters failed to find anything. The likely suspect. The Aurigid meteor shower was to have been visible. [app]
