The temperatures in New York City, its northern suburbs and Long Island are in the double digits but feel more like five below Wednesday.
Wind gusts are 15 to 20 mph.
The National Weather Service says scattered flurries are possible in the afternoon.
It says prolonged exposure to the arctic air can cause frostbite and hypothermia.
It advises protecting exposed areas by wearing hats and gloves and dressing in layers.
Fox 5 News says warming tents have been set up in the New Dorp Beach area of Staten Island, hard hit by Sandy. People can also get food and water there.
The deep freeze will continue into Thursday and Friday. There’s a chance of snow Friday afternoon and evening. Accumulations are expected to be minor.
“Temperatures… are in the double digits”.
99 degrees is also double digits.
It’s sooooo cold, that I opened my fridge to warm the house!
global warming at its best
I had to laugh when I saw the headlines which stated “Arctic temperatures”. New Yorkers don’t know what arctic temperatures are. It rarely, if ever, goes below 0 degrees fahrenheit in NYC. In my community, it is not uncommon for the temperature to go 20 degrees below 0 in the winter. Some communities have experienced temperatures even colder than that.
“Arctic????”
Oh pulease!!! Mid 20s for highs and maybe 10 at night, is NOT Arctic! Its nowhere near it! The Arctic wishes they had these temps.
All you guys who are cold in New York – consider coming to Baltimore. The temperature never dipped blow 18F last night and for today they promise as high as 27F for the highest! I love to live in subtropics!
