Kiryas Joel, NY – UPDATE: Fires Displace Dozens In Upstate NY Village (video)

Six families were left homeless when fire raged through their three-story multiple family at 6 Premishian Way in the Village of Kirays Joel on Jan. 23 2013 Dozens of people have been displaced after fires tore through two multi-family condominiums in an upstate New York village.

    Fire officials tell the Times Herald-Record of Middletown (http://bit.ly/10TTEWf ) that the first blaze started around 1:30 p.m. Wednesday and burned through a six-family building in the village of Kiryas Joel (keer-YAS’ JOH’-ehl) in Orange County, 50 miles northwest of New York City. Another fire broke out at a nearby condo several hours later.

    About 70 people were displaced because of the fires. No one was injured.

    Officials say electrical problems are suspected of sparking both fires, but the causes remain under investigation.

    Kiryas Joel was incorporated in 1977 by members of the Satmar Hasidic sect from Brooklyn.

    Nebech, and on the coldest day of the year too. Looks like these houses weren’t built very well.
