Mieczyslaw Abramowicz, a spokesman for the Jewish community in Gdansk, a port on the Baltic coast, said vandals desecrated a number of gravestones bearing the Star of David and a tombstone with s inscription calling for the respect of memory of the dead.
Abramowicz said vandals also destroyed parts of the fence of the cemetery, one of the oldest Jewish graveyards in central Europe.

Police immediately opened an investigation into the graveyard’s desecration, the radio said.

In 1939, around 3.3 million Jews lived in Poland, 400,000 of them in Warsaw. They constituted 10% of Poland’s pre-war population and 33% of Warsaw’s population.
