Albany, NY – Calling it “rumor,” and saying it is “simply untrue,” a spokesman for Governor Cuomo’s office denied allegations that a deal is being brokered which would allow the Satmar Hasidim of South Williamsburg to purchase Marcy Armory from the state.

The NEW YORK OBSERVER (http://bit.ly/Zv2tys) reports that Cuomo spokesman, Matthew Wing, was steadfast in his denial that “no one” in the governor’s office is currently involved in any such deal, and that the “reality” of the situation is that the armory—which the state has been trying to unload—will be “subject” to the RFP (bidding) process.
The scuttlebutt in Williamsburg is that local Orthodox mover-and-shaker, Abraham Eisner, is close to sealing a deal that would result in a joint purchase of the armory by Williamsburg’s warring Satmar factions—the Aaronites and the Zalmanites.
It would be beautiful if they could share it together – sit and conduct a tish together like the Rachmastrivke Rebbes sometimes – Reb Aron and Reb Zalman are both such nice people
What about the amorites.cannanites and karaites?
What are they going to do with it?
Interesting, up until 2-3 yrs ago, all the news that were generated frm the mikva stayed in mikva…
Today, the Gov. office has to deny the mikva news…
Mr Governor,
Please dont sell it to no one.The community is in extremly need of affordable housing.Families who can hardly meet their daily needs are paying manhattan prices for appartments to money hungry wolfs who are landlords.PLEASE Mr Governor have MERCY on poor families and show your soft heart by building there a few thousand affoirdable appertmants.
I wonder where our supposed community leaders are why dont they request housing on the Armory spot. Why dont they hear the cries of poor families.
SHAME on the chasiddisha developers by asking sky high prices for appertments your hands are full of blood.
SHAME On the chassidishe landlords by asking sky high prices.
There is a special place in Gihoneim for these devlepors and landlords who are getting rich sucking every penny of poor families.
I heard the (rumour) deal was to sell it for the Satmar’s for ONLY $14 Million Dollars, does anyone know more about it???
Hmmm… Aaronites v. Zalmanites in the newly renovated “Satmar Paint Ball Forum.” They already have the perfect outfits for a run through a darkened labyrinth [google it.] What a venue and so convenient! They just need to add goggles.
Luke.
wow what an idea… I think all rabbas should start to fight with their brothers/shvugers/uncles/family & the governer will hand them huge properties….. good thoughts….
Wasent this granted once to pupa? What happend?
It is good for Satmar and good for the area. Good for Satmar whether as a wedding hall or knocking down to make housing. Good for New York, because the frum yidden don’t add trouble to the area [except double parking] and nothing to education because we educate our own
The NYS Armory on Marcy Ave in Brooklyn is indeed up for grabs – so to speak.. The satmars will be granted equal oppurtunity as will the other potential bidders/buyers.
Between allowing to participate in a legit rfp and giving it away for “pennies against the dollar” (as reported by some), is a far cry.
The Governour is looking forward for a fair and beneficial process.
Mr. Gov. Coumou, the best would be to make it in to a parking lot or a nice park, don’t sell the government to power hungry factions. You’ll never make them happy. Show them a finger and you’ll find out what demands they’ll come up with.
i think it looks like a castle. now all they need is a moat and alligators and a drawbridge
The armory is in terrible conditon and needs a new roof, and new heating, cooling and lighting systems. The estimated cost is about $12-15 million. The plans are to rennovate the building and install new flooring for use for basketball, volleyball and other sports but also with bleachers so the building could be used for special simchas. The state would retain rights to use the building for emergency preparedness purposes after storms or terrorist events as a condition of the long-term lease to a not-for-profit corporation to be held jointly by the two Satmer factions.
To number 7 – affordable housing for young families should be everyone’s priority. Maybe we can rent Madison Square Garden and bring it to everyone’s attention.
you guys dont have to live on top of each others noses. obviously a jam packed community is going to have sky-high rent prices whether the landlord is chassidish or not. move a few blocks away. expand to the ‘hipster’ territory and within 2 years that whole block will become mostly jews. stop staying within the same 6 blocks
The last thing this neighborhood needs is MORE housing. The area is already overcrowded and desparately needs recreational facilities. This building’s landmark status means that it will be preserved with its current exterior footprint and facade intact. The interior will need to be gutted an rebuilt with modern utility systems. It would be criminal to turn this into another boxy Satmer “housing project”. If you have been to KJ lately, you will know the true meaning of “incredibly ugly architecture”.
Armories were built in residential neighborhoods in NY after the Civil War as military forts to keep ready for public insurrections by socialists, unionists and “foreign elements”, especially the Irish. Ever notice the gun ports in the towers? They may have kept horses there, but they kept units there to supress riots, which they expected but rarely occurred.
I remember when Pupa was supposed to get the Armery. The Satmar hotshots made such a commotion, they retracted the decision. Nobody got it.
I hope they were happy then.
