The fire broke out in the home on East 27th Street just before 10 a.m.

The building houses on the first floor Congregation Dvar Moshe of Horodenke Synagogue. The rabbi lives on the upper floor.

Heavy flames shot through the roof.

One firefighter was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.

The cause of the fire is under investigation but the rabbi believed a candle could be the cause.

Five torahs were taken out of the structure.

People have to be very careful when it comes to things like candles. Great Rabbis have taught us that our religion commands to be very machmir, very stringent, when it comes to dangerous things like fire. Dangers such as of this nature override other considerations.

Even though there is, thank G-d, increasing awareness recently about potential problems esp. at certain times (with special thanks to NYFD, Misaskim, and others for their efforts in the area), such as bedikas chometz, Shabbos and Yom tov, we see that more work still needs to be done. This incident points to the need for more care with regard to candles, but in general as well. Hopefully people will learn from it.
