New York, NY – New Law Allows City to Sell Liens from Water and Sewer Deadbeats

    1

New York, NY – Mayor Bloomberg has signed seven bills into law.
One of the bills the mayor signed allows the Department of Finance to sell liens on homes whose owners don't pay their water and sewer tabs. Deadbeats owe about $550 million.
The administration had aggressively pushed the City Council to pass the bill by threatening an 18 percent mid-year water-rate hike.

The NY Post reports that the mayor signed six other wide-ranging bills, including one that increases criminal penalties for repeated acts of public lewdness, and another requiring the Health Department to establish guidelines for cleaning up crime scenes on both public and private property, which might have a negative effect for Chevra kadisha.
