Williamsburg, NY – Traffic Signals To Be Installed On Kent Avenue Where Glauber Couple Was Killed

    11

Williamsburg, NY – Council Member Stephen Levin is announcing today that the Department of Transportation (DOT) has agreed to install traffic signals on Kent Avenue. This follows a request from Levin that the DOT take steps to prevent future tragedies along Kent Avenue after a hit-and-run resulted in the deaths of Raizy and Nathan Glauber and their newborn son this March.

There were previously no traffic signals or stop signs on Kent Avenue between Williamsburg Street West and Clymer Street, a stretch of six blocks. This had emboldened reckless drivers, like the one responsible for the hit-and-run that resulted in the deaths of the Glaubers, to turn this neighborhood street into a raceway. The motorist who caused the crash was reportedly driving 60 miles per hour.

Traffic signals will be installed in two locations – one at the intersection of Kent Avenue and Wilson Street and the other at Kent Avenue and Hooper Street.

“The lack of traffic signals had encouraged speeding to take place on Kent Avenue and tragically contributed to the hit-and-run that resulted in the deaths of Raizy and Nathan Glauber and their newborn son.” said Council Member Stephen Levin. “By installing traffic signals on Kent Avenue we are making our city streets safer for all New Yorkers—pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. I want to thank the Department of Transportation for recognizing the need to keep our streets safe and agreeing to install traffic signals along Kent Avenue.”

I wonder what the people who used to use that intersection to avoid a light, what they will do now.

A true hurt heartfelt tragedy.. nobody can/will understand the pain those families are in now, of course we hope Hashem will give them the strength to go on life as best possible under this circumstances.

To the day I still don’t understand why the cab driver was not charged.. after all he had a stop sign. the car coming on Kent Ave was speeding and leaving a scene of an accident right he did that. had the cab driver Stop at the Stop Sign, would I now write this comment?

The only street that can get you through Williamsburg with no traffic, now gone.

Just for the record: There is no “six block stretch” between Wilson St. And Clymer St.; there is one short block between Wilson St. And Taylor St. and then another short block between Taylor St. and Clymer St. Anyone can do the math.

It is truly unfortunate that a traffic light will be installed in the name of “preventing future tragedy”. Those who called for it do not know how much trouble and potential harm they are sending our way. One wishes they would actually interview local driver residents about the patterns and dynamic of pedestrian, vehicle and bicycle traffic at this intersection (and I don’t mean getting recommendations from “a spokesperson for the community” from the other side of town.) With their very best intentions, they truly don’t understand what this intersection needs, in terms of traffic reform.
