DNAinfo.co (http://dnain.fo/18WkzVg) reports that local artists are seeing a marked increase the number of Jewish couples actively seeking an alternative to the bland options of mid-century florals and ancient landscapes found on traditional ketubahs.

Elke Reva Sudin, a Clinton Hill artist who has assisted many couples with their ketubahs, said, “It’s a symbol of your relationship together. It makes it special to have something that’s going to solidify your relationship.”

“I’ve done ketubahs that are very Brooklyn, that even have the Brooklyn Bridge” said Sudin.

Brooklyn artist Erika Scott, said, “People are looking for more inventive ketubahs rather than a copy of something tradition you can buy in a store, they’re looking for something that fits their lifestyle and attitude.”

Scott said she recently did one for a couple who had their engagement pictures taken in Prospect Park, and wanted a Prospect Park-themed ketubah.

Artist and Borough Park native, Sara Erenthal, said she had recently completed her first ketubah, and that she found the experience of working with the couple a very positive one.

“It’s a big deal to ask for people’s support of my work, so I made it a point to go out of my way and make time and to touch on something I never imagined I would do,” said Erenthal.

My wife thinks artistic ketubot are odd. She’s told people that she doesn’t want an artist doing interpretations of our life insurance, the car policy, or the lease to put on the walls.
