Mayor Gordon Jenkins and Trustee Carmen Rue were sworn into office during a morning ceremony at the County Government Center. With tears streaming down his face, Jenkins thanked his supporters and acknowledged his rise to become Monticello’s first black mayor.

“I do not take lightly the fact that I am the first mayor of color in the history of Sullivan County,” Jenkins said. He added his administration would be “color blind” and work for the good of all Monticello residents. [th-record]

4:19 – He’s not going to ignore the fact that he’s the first black mayor, any more than other “firsts” would acknowledge it. He made a point not only of saying he’s the first black, but by pointing out that he will reach beyond those with the same skin color. A first woman, Jew, etc. would also acknowledge the highlight of being the first where there have been none of that sort. But they will usually go beyond those just like them to reach out to others.

If he wants to have a “color blind” administration why is he bringing up that he is the first black mayor? I am sick of this.
