Cashiers at Gourment Glatt in Borough Park section of Brookyn, NY on Jan. 14, 2014 (Eli Wohl/VINnews.com)Borough Park, NY – It was no ordinary day at the grocery today for shoppers at one Borough Park supermarket as customers were joined by members of the NYPD’s 66th precinct who were called in to arrest a cashier who was pocketing cash instead of placing it in her register.

Borough Park resident Alyssa Csukardi was arrested at Gourmet Glatt on 39th Street on charges of petty larceny by police at 1:43 this afternoon, after internal surveillance video showed the 26 year old cashier first placing a $100 bill given to her by a customer first on top of her register, and then surreptitiously slipping it into her pocket once the customer had left.

“The manager of the store started realizing that they were missing $100 every night from the same register when they were cashing out,” Motty Katz of Borough Park Shomrim told VIN News.

“He went into his office and after searching on his video surveillance, he sees how she is taking money from a customer and instead of putting it in her register, she is putting it in her pocket. We saw it once, we saw it twice and we called the police.”

According to an NYPD spokesperson, Csukardi was arrested and then issued a desk appearance ticket before being released. Csukardi will be required to appear in court at an as yet undetermined future date to face charges in the theft.

“This happened maybe five or six times,” estimated Katz, who said that Csukardi, who had been only been working for Gourmet Glatt for a few weeks, seemed surprised that she was being arrested.

“As she was being handcuffed she said to us, ‘I didn’t think I was going to get arrested. I thought the money would just come out of my paycheck,’” reported Katz.

these will go down in “famous last words” history:

‘I didn’t think I was going to get arrested. I thought the money would just come out of my paycheck,’”

Realize that all of your actions are being monitored not only by heaven but also by man…

She’s too stupid to have a job. She couldn’t image that the register tallies the days sales and is compared to the cash in the till.

It is not only this place that only hires non-Jews. Several years ago, I went to the largest kosher supermarket in Boca Raton, FL (I forgot the name). The merchandise was very nicely presented, and the store was very clean. There were a very large variety of kosher meat products to select from. The store was quite crowded. Unfortunately, the most unpleasant part of my shopping experience there, was dealing with the gentile cashier, who was not at all pleasant. The first thing she stated was “got any change”. In other words, she wanted the exact change, or something close to it, as she didn’t like giving change out. I resented her attitude. Incidentally, she was a member of a minority group. After I left that store, I kept thinking “Is this the kind impression that the Management wants to leave on customers and/or visitors? They probably could have cared less, as they never answered my letter, regarding their nasty cashier. Incidentally, when I went to the Seven Mile Market in Baltimore, I had the opposite experience. There, the cashier was very nice, and pleasant, and didn’t have an attitude!

First of all Gourmet glatt is a great shopping exprience.
They are really nice to the entire neighborhood.
Regarding employees the management is mostly heimish. And the people at the register would be more heimish if they would take the job.

I don’t think stores are allowed to discriminate when it comes to hiring workers. Here in Lakewood there are many stores with non Jewish workers and I think they are all friendly and polite and do their jobs well. As long as an employee does his job properly and honestly it doesn’t matter what religion, color or nationality one is.

About 20 years ago I asked the Jewish manager behind the counter why KOSHER delight (13th Ave) had no Jewish cashiers. He told me they had tried to accomplish that but he was told that there was no chance because it was seen as a busha to have “so and so’s son/daughter as a restaurant cashier and who’d marry such a person”

I guess things haven’t changed. Sad that an honest day’s work was/is seen as a reason to disqualify someone from shidduchim.

Landau’s in BP also has all jewish cashiers, mostly women. I too would love to see more stores using jewish cashiers. I have had way too many stories with the non jews that are prevalent in most jewish supermarkets. The amount of mistakes that are made is unbelievable often in my favor, but since it is jewish owned I now have to make sure to return the item given free or reimurse the store the amount given to me that is not coming to me. I have seen cashiers with not tzius tatoos, workers kissing in middle of the store, and had many many mistakes made over the years because the cashiers and packers are too busy shmoozing. I’ve been made to feel like the customers are a hassle as they moan how much longer they have to work and why do customers have to choose their line. I’ve had a worker call me an unpleasant name because I asked him to move as he was unpacking and blocking the aisle. I usually wait for them to finish but when it takes long I do expect them to find a way for the customers to shop.

I was once asked my Rav if I should buy my son’s bike in a Jewish bike shop that was more expensive or should I buy the bike at a goyish shop that was cheaper? The answer I got was to buy the bike by the yid and the difference in price to consider as mayser. I wonder if I should be shopping in a grocery store that employs our heimishe yungerleit but is more expensive (I presume because his payroll is higher) and the difference to consider as mayser, too.
