A Department of Education spokeswoman says Wednesday’s attendance rate was 47.1 percent. The last time it was that low was January 2011, when a similar snowstorm resulted in a 49.1 percent attendance rate.

The average daily attendance rate is about 90 percent for the 1.1 million students who make up the nation’s largest public school system.

The storm dumped a foot or more of snow across the Northeast Tuesday, closing schools in Boston, Philadelphia and in parts of Connecticut and New Jersey.

Mayor Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH’-zee-oh) ordered schools open but has faced criticism for his handling of the city’s response to the storm.

That means there’s over 100,000 kids every day missing school, Why ?

Students can’t learn if they aren’t in school. New curriculum and higher standards won’t work unless the students show up. Where are the parents?
Snow clean-up was horrible. Driving last night, I saw unplowed side streets. Some of the important streets, such as Avenue J weren’t in great shape either. .Much was mentioned in Bloomberg’s time about GPS following the plows. That doesn’t record if the plows are raised, only where the trucks were. We all saw sanitation trucks with the plows raised and few functioning salters.
DeBlasio picked a Sharpton aide as chief of staff for his wife, it would have been better if he spent more time getting the city back in shape. Why exactly does she need a hierarchy of staff?

Every kid savors a snow day. There’s nothing quite as sweet.

parents kept their kids home because the walking and driving were treacherous! There was no time to shovel before the kids had to be at school. Kudos to the parents who exercised good judgement and kept their kids home.
