NYTIMES.com (http://nyti.ms/1j3zTST) reports that among the speakers at the exhibit, which opened to public on Saturday, April 25, was Ernő Rubik, the inventor of the cube.
Looking back on the 40 years since he introduced the puzzle, Rubik said, “I made something I found interesting and my idea was, ‘It’s good,’ and I wanted to share it with other people. I was not thinking about the size of the popularity and that kind of thing. It’s happened because of the cube, not because of me.”
Folks attending the exhibit can see an array of Rubik’s Cube-themed offshoots, including a 2,300 lb. version of the puzzle, an 18-karat gold Rubik’s cube estimated to be worth about $2.5M, and a robotic arm that scans the puzzle’s colors and, using algorithms, solves the puzzle in less than a minute.
Paul Hoffman, the president and chief executive of the Liberty Science Center in Jersey City, said that in the past 40 years over one billion to 2.5 billion cubes had been manufactured, assuming there were five counterfeits for every legitimate one sold.
