Jerusalem – A Pfizer medication produced in an Israeli manufacturing facility has received certification from the Orthodox Union, an American Jewish organization that assigns the circled-U “Ⓤ” symbol to food.

On its web site Pfizer says Elelyso, used for Type 1 Gaucher disease and produced in Israel, received the label.
The kosher label was applied because Protalix Biotherapeutics, the company that runs the manufacturing facility, uses “genetically engineered carrot cells grown in a simple solution of water, plant extracts, sugar and a mixture of vitamins and minerals.”
Most kosher rules allow the use of medications and do not oversee non-oral medications such as Elelyso, which is injected, but Pfizer states the kosher label shows their commitment to the Gaucher disease community. Approximately 6,000 people in the United States are affected with Type 1 Gaucher, and one in every 14 Ashkenazi Jews is a carrier of the disease.
Shame on the ou for taxing these unfortunate families with this phony Hashgacha. No Rabbi has yet figured out how to make a buck on Pesach Sheni; go to it men.
Very nice. However, Yidden shouldn’t fool themselves that they will not get a dose of assorted chazari in one form or another during their 120 years here.
Shame on you OU for making a mockery of kashrut. you guys went from the gold standard in the industry to the bottom of the barrel in the blink of an eye. What’s next, Kosher Preparation H Suppositories?
I see people that bash ou really know what they are talking about. Maybe it’s time for ahavas chinam after all that’s happening to us.
