Jerusalem, Israel – Edah HaChareidis Celebrates 30 Years of Independent School System

    22

Jerusalem, Israel – Some 20,000 boys aged eight to 13 will descend on the road leading to Jerusalem’s Ramot neighborhood at midday on Monday to mark the 30th anniversary of an independent school system that refuses to accept funds from the State of Israel for ideological reasons.

The boys will congregate at the Tamir wedding hall and then walk toward the adjacent Kiryat Sanz neighborhood. As a result of celebrations, Rehov Shefa Haim, which connects Kiryat Sanz with central Jerusalem, will be closed.

Created by Rabbi Yoel Teitelbaum, the spiritual leader of Satmar hassidism after the Holocaust, the Keren Hatzola (emergency fund) foots the bill for an extensive school system that teaches a curriculum based solely on traditional sources such as the Bible, Mishnah and Talmud.

Rabbi Teitelbaum established the fund in 1978 after prime minister Menachem Begin’s government, as part of a deal with haredi politicians, began offering substantial funding to educational institutions belonging to ultra-Orthodoxy.

Satmar and other hassidic sects such as Toldot Aharon and the more virulently anti-Zionist Lithuanian streams of Orthodoxy, all consolidated under the rabbinical body known as the Edah Haredit, refuse to cooperate with the Jewish state, which they see as a rebellion against G-d’s will that Jews remain powerless and sovereignless until the coming of the messiah.

Members of the Edah Haredit do not participate in elections, either.

The Keren Hatzola helps fund more than 100 institutions, including in Beit She’an, Ashdod, Safed, Haifa and Beersheba.

This is a pronominal concept that I never heard of. It is so blatant that the government is anti religious, on so many counts. It is a shame that Satmar had to be the one to establish it. It is clear that the day will come when the government will manipulate our parties to compromise on fundamentals. It is a matter of time. Now day it is very difficult to be frum in this land of ours. Hashem should help us all.

They are right to accept no money from the government, but they should vote anyway, so the government should fear them.

    Good for them.

There’s a story, not sure of how reliable it is, that the Lubavitcher Rebe said if the Satmar Rebbe hadn’t taken the position he did against the state, he himself would have to. So B’H for Satmar.

That would make them pure hypocrits, no money, no nothing, no medical care, no police or fire assistance,,,, u forgot to mention that they do not pay taxes to the terrible state also. Do not use buses, water, electricity or anything..

The money should not stay by the goverment, but the Holy Torah should not be supported by atheists. We are proud to accept Hashem’s Golus procedure, till his redemption.

with all respect to the satmars, the satmar rav said that if u accept money from the zionist govmt, it will certainly have an effect on our children etc. the question is, who is in a better “matzav rochni”?satmar or perhaps gur, viznitz, belz & all others..? which just shows that those gedolim who permitted taking funds from govmt. can certainly be relied on! but in the same time we all agree that the satmar rav was a holy person, no doubt.

Halacha is that if a sefer torah is written by an Apikoris, it has to be burned.

How can you take money from the athiest Zionist medina? I saw written in a sefer, when mashiach comes, all the yeshivas that took money from the medina, the buildings will burn.

I do not understand any of you who say that our educational institutions here in EY should not take government money! I pay taxes and therefore there is no reason that MY tax money should fund secular schools rather than my children’s frum schools. And even Satmar/Neturai-Karta/Eida-Chareidis, even if they work off the books and do not pay income tax, however, they sure pay LOTS of VAT (aka sales tax) when they buy lots and lots of necessary items for their B”H large families. Why should the money that they pay to the state (in the form of sales tax) go to secular schools rather than their schools!

The Satmars should give 10% of their money to the families of fallen soldiers….Gave up the ultimate, so that these guys can curse out the state….What’s wrong with this picture?…I suppose Hakaros Hatov isn’t part of their lifestyle…Without those Hesder and Chiloni soldiers.,The Satmars would’ve been incinerated.

OK so the school doesn’t take money but the people get welfare kupat cholim and all the protection that the state provides.Where is hakorot hatov for that? Without state would the Hamas/PA support them?
