Moshe Rubashkin of New York City pleaded guilty in February to a charge of illegal storage of hazardous waste without a permit. His son, Sholom Rubashkin, pleaded guilty to a charge of making a false statement to federal officials. Each of the men faces up to five years in prison and $250,000 in fines.

The pleas were the result of a deal with prosecutors. As part of the deal, the Rubashkins will have to pay the government $450,000 as compensation for site cleanup work.

Moshe Rubashkin is the son of Agriprocessors’ founder Aaron Rubashkin. His son, Sholom, shares the same name as his uncle, an Agriprocessors executive who lives in Postville.

The convictions stem from the Rubashkins’ ownership of Montex Textiles of Pennsylvania. In 2002, two years after the company ceased operations, containers of hazardous waste were being stored at the site without the required environmental permits.

In 2005, the textile mill was scheduled to be sold at a sheriff’s auction because of unpaid taxes. Shortly before the planned sale, a fire broke out at the plant. Over the next few months, there were three more fires — one of which was attributed to arson.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency then began a major cleanup of the site, and a grand jury issued indictments against the Rubashkins.

Moshe Rubashkin is expected to be sentenced July 16. His son is scheduled for sentencing July 21.

This is not Moshe Rubashkin’s first brush with the law. In 2002, he was fined $233,000 and was sentenced to 15 months in prison for bank fraud.

it has everything to do with agri, since this shows a pattern of lies, fraud, illegal acts perpetrated by the Rubashkins.

Do people still think they are innocent, and all the reports of what went on at agri was not know to the Rubashkins.

Nor sure how one can defend them anymore, they are simply dishonest people

While the problems with Agriprocessors are severe, there is more than just “briskets on Shabbos” that Uri L’Tzedek is responding to. The “middleman” is the one generally getting screwed. The restaurants and butcher shops have been supplied with cheap meat from Agri for a long time, and finding new suppliers for both the volume and anywhere close to the price has been difficult. The damage to Agriprocessors has already done, due to their lowered output combined with those refusing to buy their products-many establishments have switched away, not looking back, and they should be respected. Boycotting Agriprocessor meat entirely has the potential, especially in today’s economy, not just to force Jews to be vegetarians (not that it would be a bad thing) but to put MANY people out of business who have risked a tremendous amount to open up these places (kosher restaurants are considered successful if they can break even within 3 years!)..

So what are we to do? We have to judge him and make an intelligent decision on whether or not we trust him or not.

I am specifically referring to Rabbi Moshe Rubashkin, head of the Crown Heights Kehilla, one of the organizations that gives a hechsher to Agriprocessors. If Rabbi Rubashkin gives a hechsher to his brother, what is the value of such hechsher????

I have a life, thank you, and I am not nogea b’davar when it comes to Kashrus.

Rabbi Moshe Rubashkin is in charge of the money. Guess who pays the shochtim and mashgichim. Please re-read the last line of the article.

As for most rabbonim being related – now you know why Kashrus takes a second seat there.

Stop obssessing about this family! Is yours beseder? Do you have any cousins or uncles that are in trouble? If yes, go and help them get out of trouble!

All these high and mighty comments condemning the Rubashkins obviously come from people who have not owned or operated any business in the last 20 years. Certainly not a food business. And that goes double for a food business.

To whom are you addressing your comments? To the posters on this blog, to the blog administrator or to the media that posts this story.

This story IS news. What is happening are not accidents or mistakes. These are deliberate acts of people that are out to get something that it not theirs, be it money, power, influence.

How many food businesses have closed down because of employee problems or safety issues? Notmany, The prime causes are lack of business. If the business is thriving, as was Agri, then a prudent owner will put more money back into the business to make it even better. A foolish owner might use it as a ‘cash cow’ and milk it for everything that it is worth. That would be a foolish strategy, because everything will eventually crash like a ton of bricks around him.
