Brooklyn, NY – NY Assemblyman Seeks To Solve School Bus/Garbage Collection Conflict In Borough Park

    27

Assemblyman Hikind meets with BP yeshiva representatives.Brooklyn, NY – After meeting with 70 reps from all of Borough Park’s yeshivas, Assemblyman Dov Hikind (D-Brooklyn) said he will be asking the NYC Department of Sanitation to modify its morning garbage collection schedule, which has come under fire recently for clogging up streets and making children riding buses late for school.

In a statement released by his office, Hikind said Borough Park utilizes more school buses than any neighborhood in the city, and that forcing thousands of students to remain on the buses longer than necessary behind slow moving trash trucks is “unfair and unhealthy.”

Hikind said he plans on asking Sanitation Dept. heads to be “fair,” and suspend their morning pick-ups between the hours of 7:30 and 9:30 a.m.

Hikind said it is not only “improper” to have students continuously walking into school late, but that commuters, as well, would benefit from a moratorium on pick-ups during those hours.

Citing an ongoing pilot program that delays pick-ups in certain areas experiencing similar problems, Hikind called it the “right thing to do” for the neighborhood’s children and parents.

“I am determined to make this happen,” Hikind said.

And what about that famous intersection (15-44) where you have trucks double parked each morning doing delivery and pickup?

he is a very very good hearted person.I had some personal issues and he helped me out to the bottom of his heart. let’s all show our support

I applaud Dov Hikind for addressing this issue. However, it is not as simple as this article makes it sound. Part of the calculation is that the alternate sides parking issue provides the times when sanitation can do their pickup with less problem of parked cars, and thus less obstruction of traffic. Altering the garbage pickup would make chaos with the alternate side issue. It is more complex, and would require much more modification to work well without making things more confusing and inconvenient.

    1) Count the people in the picture 30 people, not 70. 2) Dov thinks we are fools. Where was he the last 30 years; before the election he wakes up 3) He is a NYS assemblyman, not a NYC councilman. He should be working on state funding for housing. This is something councilman greenfield should be working on

Mr. Hikind, I applaud your efforts on behalf of the constituents in Borough Park. Now how about doing something for your adult constituent workers who live in Midwood and work in Manhattan. It has been FOUR LONG YEARS since the MTA axed the X29 Express Bus to Manhattan that ran along Coney Island Avenue for 40 years. Your SILENCE on this issue has been deafening. Perhaps, your opponent will do something to help bring back the X29 to Midwood.

And what about the parents & children that have to wait in all kinds of weathers by the corner because the bus won’t come down the block if there’s a garbage truck!!!! It’s about time something is done.

i for the life of me cant figure out
if the city is worried about the environment. and traffic cause more fumes from cars etc etc

they should change all garbage pick ups from midnight to 6 am

    it would get done faster

people would be able to bring in their empty cans in the morning before work

    the city would look cleaner
and we would save the environment

i would like to hear 1 reason why it cant work (and dont say the noise .. they have quiter trucks today and they should get quieter trucks) and most commercial garbage pick ups are at those times …

Maybe Mr. Caller who is running against Dov will get it done from 6:30 till 9:30…???
He promises to get 2000 more apartments in BP i am sure he can pull this thru…

What about the other areas of Brooklyn ie. Flatbush, Marine Park, etc.?? It’s insane that garbage pickups are during rush hour! Why should people have to get stuck on side streets and get to work late??? Do only the children getting to school matter???? Change the pickups to not coincide with rush hour!!! How much brilliance does it take to understand the absurdity of this???

if everyone was slightly considerate, traffic could move better even in a place like boro park. the garbage truck issue here is a NO BRAINER. do it. no trucks before 930. alternate side is never trash pick up time anyway
