Jerusalem – Mayor Uri Lupolianski will not run for another term in November’s municipal elections. His party, United Torah Judaism, will elect a new candidate for mayor, who will compete against Russian-Israeli billionaire Arcadi Gaydamak and his Social Justice party.

At the moment, the leading candidate is Knesset Member Meir Porush.
Lupolianski heads the UTJ faction in Jerusalem, which is comprised of the Hasidic Agudat Israel and the Lithuanian Degel Hatorah.
In the previous elections, five years ago, Agudath Israel endorsed the Lithuanian candidate in order to form a united front against businessman Nir Barkat. The parties agreed that in the 2008 elections, Degel Hatorah will support Agudath Israel’s candidate.
Agudath Israel’s national council will convene next Monday in order to name its candidate. Another contender, apart from Porush, is Deputy Jerusakem Mayor Yehoshua Pollack.
Lupolianski himself can still be named as the faction’s representatives, but his chances of being are slim due to the agreement between the parties. In any event, he has no plan to violate the agreement between the two factions.
The Jerusalem Municipality said in response that “Mayor Uri Lupolianski honors agreements.”
Jerusalem’s first haredi mayor is not expected to make the transition to the Knesset. “If Lupolianski does not compete for the role of mayor, he will be interested in returning to his previous, voluntary job as chairman of the Yad Sarah organization,” the municipality said.

Yerushalayim needs to be reverted back to look like the iyr Hakodesh it is. Be treated like the Iyr Hakoseh it is with reverence tznius and Yirah instead of a vacation entertainment center which it has become.

I was in the tunnels by the Koisel last week davening right on the opposite of the Kodesh Hakdoshim and a group female tourists came through dressed as if they were at the beach.
It was a hard reminder that we are in golus but it was heart wrenching.
You decided on this after reading Protocols of Zion?
Lupolianski has universal appeal ebe though he’s chareidi & therefore was able to win the elections by not only getting the chareidi vote but even more importantly the non-chareidi vote which historically is difficult for a chareidi to get.
I don’t know if Meir Porush has any appeal outside the chareidi fold, especially since many chareidim don’t vote at all. Adding to the threat is Arcadi Gaydamak who recently has become quite popular in Chareidi circles for his philanthropy & in general showing very warm feelings towards the chareidi community. In non-chareidi circles I don’t Porush even has a chance against Gaydamak
Porush should stay in the Knesset. The skills of communication, respectful relationship bldg, hear another POV, was evident in Lupolianski: Gaydamak or Nir may end up being the future mayor if the only choice is Porush.

I happen to be an Aguda supporter., but in this case I think you can say; “If it ain’t broken why fix it.
Is the Agudah a bunch of babies. If the guy is doing a good job why replace him. Imagine a pitcher throwing a no- hitter being replaced in the bottom of the ninth by someone unproven. (As a mayor.)
L’havdil in the arab countries you see USA and European woman newscasters reporting with a headscarf. If tourists (women & Men) were told that this is a place of Kedusha and one should dress accordingly they will understand & respect Eretz Yisroel as the Holy Land and their experience will be more satisfying/spiritual.
I recall the Lubavicher Rebbe relating a story at a Farbrengen about a high United States government official on a visit to Eretz Yisroel to assess significant aid from the USA The Israeli Government were anxious to impress him with their accomplishment so they showed him all the tall technical/medical buildings, he said he was not impressed because where he came from in the US there were taller buildings etc. One day he was in his hotel room and he decided to walk thru on his own he wandered through Meah Shearim and saw a Ceder where a Melamid was learning with young children – the table and chairs were not that modern. He also went to the Kossel where he was ‘experienced’ the Tzdokah Collectors. He said now I saw The Holy Land and Eretz Yisroel got the aid.
