The official who is close to the minister said late Monday that Baird simply felt it was the right time to move on after a successful career in both the Ontario provincial legislature and federal parliament. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak ahead of Tuesday’s announcement.

Baird, 45, is one of Conservative Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s most trusted cabinet ministers. He previously served as minister of transport and the environment.

A statement from Baird’s office said he planned to make an announcement in Parliament on Tuesday, but did not disclose any details.

The official says Baird won’t be running for parliament in the next federal election, scheduled for October.

A great friend of the Jews and a true friend to the Jewish state, much like his boss Prime Minister Stephen Harper. He has always shown to be compassionate towards Israel and genuinely concerned about what Israel is up against. Too bad this country doesn’t have the likes of John Baird and Stephen Harper. Hopefully 2016 we will in a Jeb Bush or a Scott Walker or a handful of the others.
