FacebookChicago – A social media campaign gained strength on Monday for a Muslim chaplain at Northwestern University who said she was denied an unopened can of soda on a United Airlines-affiliated carrier after a flight attendant told her it could be used as a weapon.

Referring to the incident last week, Tahera Ahmad said in a Facebook post the flight attendant had discriminated against her and that she was the subject of anti-Islamic hatred by other passengers on the flight from Chicago to Washington.

Bob Birge, a spokesman for Republic Airways Holdings, which operated the Shuttle America flight on behalf of United, told cable news channel CNN on Monday that the airline’s beverage policy does not prohibit serving unopened cans to passengers.

Ahmad has garnered global support on Twitter at #UnitedforTahera, where many have urged a boycott of the airline.

United spokesman Charles Hobart said a flight attendant attempted several times to accommodate Ahmad’s beverage request after a misunderstanding regarding a can of diet soda.

“We spoke with Ms. Ahmad on Saturday to get a better understanding of what occurred and to apologize for not delivering the service our customers expect when traveling with us,” Hobart said.

Is there any proof beyond her own testimony that this actually happened? Not too belittle the situation if it did, but an individual’s testimony about their own experience is not newsworthy.

There’s a lot of interpretation going on here. The hostess handed the other guy a can of beer and opened it, so where’s the discrimination? Did she really tell her “she” could use it as a weapon? Or that it “could” be used as a weapon, which is not discrimination but good prudence. Sounds to me like this lady just is just crying out for some attention

Can u blame the airline for being realistic?
After all, it is not the Chinese engineering students that blow up buildings…..

Its happened to me numerous airlines, they don’t give closed cans of beverages, they always open the cans as policy. If they gave anyone a closed can, it was probably an error……

Millions and millions of people on this planet have to go through careful airport checkups because muslims were doing suicide missions in airplanes. What is the percentage of usage of weapons in airplanes (in the past 70 years) by muslims versus other religions? What is the percentage of terrorist activities done by muslims versus other religions? What percentage of people willing to carry suicide missions to kill civilians by muslims versus other religions? What percentage of religious leaders believe in killing people of other faith to propagate your own by muslims versus other religions?

I was never given a closed can of soda nor a closed bottle of whisky on flight. They ALWAYS open it for passangers. I believed the reason was so that it can’t be resold after flying. Why the hype?? Just ignore her… I’m a frequent flyer, maybe I should also cmplain…

Discriminated against? Seriously??? I was almost strip searched in public in both London & Paris, my carry-on searched multiple times. The Muslim woman in front of me in the full shmattehs waltzed through no problem – even though she had a whole case full of cosmetics (they opened it, waved her through.) So I asked why me, not her. You can guess the rest.

Trouble is, they started up with the wrong dame here.

Northwestern University must be so happy to get this attention. I’m sure CNN cameras are all over the campus. Well done Ms. Ahmad. A gift to the intolerant.

What is the difference between an open and closed can, in terms of using it as a weapon? Hard for me to imagine one is more dangerous than the other.

I get unopened cans of soda every time I ask. I think the stewardesses assume (I never say it clearly) it’s for the reasons of kashrus and don’t make a fuss.

Having said that, what the stewardess did in the case of this made up muslim machcheifa is an example of very prudent behaviour. I hope it continues.

Unfortunately she may be right, but she should blame the 19 Muslim hijackers who scared everyone beyond rational thinking.

Most of you get all out of shape and into a theological frenzy, invoking Amelek, the Shoah and Shas, if goyim aren’t there to support Yidden when we are faced with discrimination. Your self-centered hypocrisy is disgusting, but par for the course for White…er…I mean…Yid trash bigots.

What you bigots do not know is that this woman is a director of Interfaith Engagement at Northwestern University and was on the way to a conference promoting dialogue between Israeli and Palestinian youths. During the Gaza War she spoke at an interfaith peace event that included Jews and Baha’i (whom Muslims consider heretics). In the past she spoke at the University of Chicago Jewish/Muslim Initiative on a panel with frum Jewish women. She has an extensive history of promoting peace and understanding between Muslims and Jews. I would feel much safer sitting next to her on a plane than next to one of you racist, hate-spouting Yidden who follow all of the rules but apparently understand none of them.

Aaaahhhh…..I am sorry….in that case she should have held a sign stating that she does not believe in the literal meaning of the koran and that she’s not like the other muslims…
