The advertisement rejected last week by the Canaan advertising company, which is charged with advertising with the Egged bus cooperative, includes the portrait of two fully clothed women – along with a man – running for city council on a joint religious-secular list called Wake up Jerusalem-Yerushalmim. The municipal elections will take place on November 11.

A spokesman for the company on Wednesday stood by the rejection of the ad.

“All advertisements are subject to the approval of the Egged censor,” Canaan company spokesman Ohad Gibli said.

“In order not to offend the sensitivities of a certain public, certain criteria have been defined regarding the content of advertisements.”

Pictures of women cannot appear on buses that go through haredi neighborhoods, Gibli said.

Egged spokesman Ron Ratner said the bus company was never asked about advertisements with the portraits of women running for the city council, and would never have nixed them.

“Egged never received a query on this issue and would never have rejected such an advertisement of a public figure so long as it was positive, modest and respectable, and did not hurt public sensitivities,” he said.

The Egged spokesman said he thought the whole issue was a PR ploy since the would-be city councilors never contacted Egged on the issue.

“It is very sad that in Israel of 2008 women suffer such brazen discrimination, which is absolutely unacceptable,” said Wake up Jerusalem-Yerushalmim spokeswoman Meirav Cohen, whose portrait was one of those appearing on the banned advertisement.

She said the whole conversation with the advertising company was taped, and that the bus company was trying to skirt responsibility for the ban.

In the meantime, the ads in question have gone up on bus stations, which are the responsibility of another advertising company.

Last month, Egged removed political advertisements on the sides of its buses sponsored by the Meretz Party against the “haredization” of Jerusalem

To show the women that the men are not against them, why don’t they ban ANY person’s image, male or female, young or old, any color or religion…all out of ads…let the ad companies figure out how to advertise with the image or animation of any person. Then the women will feel better and the men won’t be such big shots.

I’m a woman and all I have to say is: Kol Hakavod to Gibli from the Canaan company for their sensitivity. Just like they would try not to offend Arabs, so should they have the same consideration for the Chareidim.

Does the ban apply to ugly women too? Golda’s face was never the stuff of day-dreams. Nightmares, maybe.

People have to stop thinking with their nether-regions. God gave you a brain, use it. He gave you eyelids, use them if need be. For men who are married, keep your eyes on your wife, and not on every other woman who passes by. Stop blaming everyone else because you happen to have a sick twisted mind. Lowlives.

This same mentality was applied in Brooklyn and forced a sheitel store to remove head shots of women wearing sheitels because it was across the street from a Yeshiva. I must assume that the H.S. boys never see anything worse than such a photo.

So women are restricted as to when and whose company they can sing, and their photos kept from public view!
Who are these men who deem themselves the arbitrators over the lives of all women?
Arrogant doesn’t even cover such chutzpa to alot for themselves all decision-making. If women were not doing the drudge work and men shared in keeping house, home and children clean – they would have less time to think up ways to restrict women as full participants in the human race based on talent, will, desire and God given rights – not man made.
