New York, NY – New York City Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito is condemning the suggestion that she and her colleagues receive a 71 percent raise.

The New York Daily News reported Thursday that more than a half-dozen councilmembers want a raise from $112,500 to $192,500.
Mark-Viverito held an impromptu gaggle with City Hall reporters to say the plan was “ridiculous.”
The city’s independent Quadrennial Commission is mulling raises for all lawmakers. It is expected to make a recommendation by year’s end.
Mark-Viverito declined to say whether she would support any sort of raise for council members, some of whom offered to exchange ethics reforms for more pay.
The last raise for council members came in 2006.
The report comes as the rank-and-file police union has protested a potential 1 percent raise for city cops.
