Israel – The Shin Bet internal security service released a rare statement on Thursday defending itself against what it called “a false smear campaign” by far-right Jewish extremists who have accused the organization of using torture against suspects in the firebombing attack that killed three members of a Palestinian family in the West Bank in July.

The Shin Bet stated that it was carrying out an investigation into “a Jewish terror cell…which is behind severe terror attacks motivated by an extremist, anti-Zionist ideology.”
The group in question sees the Duma attack as a model to emulate and have continued to carry out other attacks in its aftermath, the organization said.
The Shin Bet’s ongoing investigation is aimed at uncovering the cell’s activities and preventing further attacks, it said.
The organization insisted that its investigation was in keeping with the law and was no different than other cases in which its goal is to prevent future terror attacks.
“In legal discussions, as well as in various media outlets, claims have been made that during the investigation suspects were sexually harassed, their intimate parts were harmed, a torture device was used, they were kicked and spit on, electric shocked and even that one of the suspects tried to commit suicide,” the statement read.
“The Shin Bet wishes to emphasize that these claims are lies that are completely disconnected from reality!” the statement read. The goal of the false claims is to blacken the name of the Shin Bet and disrupt the investigation, it added.
The Shin Bet said that it would continue its investigation of the group that “believes the State of Israel has no right to exist.”
The organization added that the terror cell’s vision is “overthrowing the government of Israel through violent means (including the murder of Palestinians), starting a rebellion in order to crown a king, undermining relations between Israel and other countries, kicking out non-Jews and harming minorities.”
The Shin Bet said that all of its information on the group’s “vision” was taken from the cell’s own internal documents.
