San Jose Fire Department Capt. Christopher Salcido said 13 others suffered minor injuries and were treated at the scene.

Four people were transported to area hospitals with major to moderate injuries. In addition, a boy of undetermined age was taken to a hospital as a precaution, said California Highway Patrol officer Chris Miceli.

CHP hasn’t released the identity of the victims. Miceli said the accident is under investigation and the Santa Clara County district attorney has been notified, which Miceli said is a routine measure.

Miceli said the driver will be asked to submit a blood sample to test for alcohol and drugs. The driver was one of those taken to the hospital, Miceli said.

“We still don’t know what caused the accident,” Miceli said.

The bus flipped on its side while traveling north on Highway 101 in San Jose around 6:40 a.m., Miceli said. Miceli said the bus carrying the driver and 39 passengers flipped onto the center divider while driving north.

Miceli said a motorist traveling south hit some of the debris, damaging the car but leaving the driver uninjured.

The crumpled bus remained on its right side straddling the center median throughout the morning commute. Highway 101 is a major commute thoroughfare.

The accident snarled a morning commute already slowed by rain, backing up northbound Highway 101 for several miles.

At the scene, it appeared there were two bodies covered with yellow tarps near the front of the bus. Emergency workers in bright-yellow suits and firefighters worked near the bus in the rain, and fire trucks and ambulances were parked nearby.
