Ashdod, Israel – The Ashdod Police this morning attempted to locate several youths suspected of spray-painting swastikas and anti-Jewish graffiti on the walls of the port city’s “Lev Simcha” Talmud Torah school, which belongs to the Gur Hasidic dynasty.

The Talmud Torah’s principal, Rabbi Shmuel Goldberg, and the teaching staff arrived at the school on Sunday and were shocked to discover the graffiti and swastikas. The Nazi symbols and anti-Jewish inscriptions were spray-painted from the school’s gate to the walls of the classrooms.

“It was simply shocking,” said Rabbi Goldberg. “They spray-painted the graffiti on the walls and simply went from one classroom to another, painted inside the classroom and on every blackboard in every classroom. They systematically covered the entire school that way. There were also inscriptions in Russian against Judaism and the haredim.”

Speaking of his personal feelings, Rabbi Goldberg said, “We just stood there stunned, and the first thing that came to my mind was that we must recruit teachers and workers to cover up these inscriptions before the students enter the classrooms.

“This shocks me, particularly as this is a clean and tidy school. We invested our souls in it; I practically bled to keep it going. These are things we see in places across the world where there is anti-Semitism. I never believed such things could happen here as well.”

Ashdod police commander Chief Superintendent Danny Elgarat said, “This is one of the most shocking cases we’ve encountered. We had swastika graffiti incidents in the past, but we never encountered it like this before and we are exerting all efforts to reach those who were responsible for this.”

According to Chief Superintendent Elgarat, the police view the incident as an extremely severe case and have appointed a special investigation team.
“We have launched advanced investigative operations and I believe we are getting close to catching the people who did this. On the personal level it was very difficult to see those inscriptions.”
