The U.N. chief, in Israel for the day, demanded a “full explanation.”

A senior Israeli military officer said Israeli troops shelled after coming under fire from Palestinian militants inside the compound _ an account dismissed by a U.N. official there at the time as “nonsense.”

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who is in the region to end the devastating offensive against Gaza’s Hamas rulers, said the Israeli defense minister told him there had been a “grave mistake.”

Even as a top Israeli envoy went to Egypt to discuss a cease-fire proposal, the military pushed farther into Gaza in an apparent effort to step up pressure on Hamas. Ground forces thrust deep into a crowded neighborhood for the first time, sending terrified residents fleeing for cover. Shells also struck a hospital, five high-rise apartment buildings and a building housing media outlets in Gaza City, injuring several journalists.

Bullets also entered another building housing The Associated Press offices, entering a room where two staffers were working but wounding no one. The Foreign Press Association, representing journalists covering Israel and the Palestinian territories, demanded a halt to attacks on press buildings.

The army had collected the locations of media organizations at the outset of fighting to avoid such attacks.

If Israel wants to remain with some dignity or political value in the world they need to leave Gaza right away.

The UN is asking for this kind of trouble. Why do they allow the Hamas to operate from their facilities?????

Can the UN please explain where their good will and condemnations on attacks at civilians were while Sderot was being shelled on a daily basis? Also, exactly what did they do while they witnessed the kidnaping and murder of Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev HY”D? Let them go find some other part of the world to terrorize with their humanitarianism.

israel should not care about political value in the world. israel needs to do what is best for its citizens and get rid of hamas and not back off.

WHY is there a U.N. building there? Who needs it? What was their mission and did they achiev anything there? Doubtful. This U.N. building is a bunch of baloney. Any diplomatic dealings they want to have couled easily have been done in Israel or Egypt. Does America have a U.N. building every 1000 miles? Every 10,000 miles? No. Only one! In any case, the U.N. is not “holier” than a Mosque, school or hospital. If they harbor terrosists there, or worse, shoot from there, they should be bombed to smithereens!!!

This has got to end quickly; its becoming Israel against the whole world. While the U.N. is not innocent in these matters, EY cannot risk further isolation. I suspect this was not a well thought out action and we will be sorry for its consequence.

Take a look at what’s going on and not what you want to happen or think best.

Israel is not trying to conquer Gaza or destroy Hamas but to put pressure on it. The government of Israel’s preference for a quick withdrawal and not a months-long occupation is clear. This is war as theater or war as diplomacy; not war to overthrow.

All of you comparing this to WWII and the Nazis … well the Israeli government appears to disagree and since they run the military action in Gaza, we have to assume tactics appropriate for their goals. Given that, it is certainly a valid position to say that Israel may have already gotten the most out of this that it can.

It’s a separate discussion whether Israel has the right goals or is balancing differing goals appropriately.

What is most troubling to me about the postings on this site (and, for that matter, on most discussions of Israel-Palestinian issues) is the lack of nuance. Everyone sees things in black or white, without allowing for the possibility that there are shades of gray. I love Israel and support its actions. But at the same time I feel terrible seeing the loss of so many civilian lives in Gaza. That is not to say that I’m accusing Israel of wrongdoing or that I’m not also very sympathetic to the citizens of S’derot and other Southern Israel towns for the terrorism they face. It simply is to say that the loss of human life of all forms is tragic. And yet, just based on that simple remark, I expect I would be attacked by many on this blog as a traitor and an Israel basher and if I made the same comments on a pro-Palestinian website I’d be attacked as a zionist supporter. Very sad.

Israel has to fight this war. When hamas lays down their ammunition, there will be no more war. When Israel lays dowm their ammunition there will be no Israel. So Israel has gotta do what its gotta do, even if it might not match popular opinion.

not passing judgement on any military decision beyond my grasp, but i know that this is a huge defeat in the propaganda war for world opinion, and when the world thinks less of us that is never good for the jews.

I hope the reasons for bombing the compound outscaled the above loss.

Hamas do this as there tactic to use schools and un as a shield and to get the world on there side and this way they get support at the same time no one knows if Hamas them self has bombed it them self and we will have to wait if there will ba a investigation I don’t think will ever happen.

The world has forgotten that Hamas is a terrorist organisation and do not keep international laws only israel has to keep it as they are a legal binding country and thats a big problem when they put you under these circumstances

    Hashem please help

For 8 years Jews were being killed and wounded from rockets fired by Gaza. Now its time to kill every man woman and child in Gaza just as G-d told us to do to Amalek. If the gazans were so intrested in saving there homes and families they would not be shooting to this very day rockets. Send them all to their 72 virgin land via the Israeli army. Yes we Jews have taken enough from these punks who even their own brothers hate them.

How did thousands of pounds of food for the arabs make it to the UN without hamas hijacking it? Was the UN the highest bidder? Perhaps that means all US an other money funding the UN does go to fund hamas through their hijack&auction tactics?
