WCBS also reports that a smoke alarm in the home was not working when the fire broke out.

The fire early Sunday claimed the life of Thomas Curly, known as T.J.

Friends and neighbors fondly described T.J. as a good kid who was excited about the Christmas season.

Students at Public School 114 in Belle Harbor were wearing blue — T.J.’s favorite color — in his memory on Monday.

Family members who escaped the fire were in stable condition.
