The deal was announced Thursday by the city, Islamic community leaders and their lawyers.
Last month, Judge William Martini in federal court in Newark, New Jersey, gave both sides 60 days to finalize the settlement.
The suit was filed in 2012 following reports by The Associated Press that revealed how the NYPD infiltrated Muslim student groups and put informants in mosques as part of a broad effort to prevent terrorist attacks.
The effort crossed state lines into New Jersey, where the department collected intelligence on ordinary people at mosques, restaurants and schools starting in 2002, the AP reported.
If there is no terror being committed or planned what are the muslims scared of? As long as the police spying is limited to only terror crimes I am totally OK with them spying on jews at shuls and mikvas too.
But to the greater point, racial profiling is usually wrong . However common sense has to prevail. As with torture and other enforcements there are extreme times where extreme measures are necessary. Terrorism is so extreme in nature and severity that it requires racial profiling. And that means profiling religions that endorse violence as a means to an end of a conflict , dispute or against the west. And even if its only a minority, providing that its a significant minority that constitutes even hundreds of thousands (let alone millions) that abide by those teachings the whole religion should be profiled.
And by the way if there is a religion or sect that supports mass shootings maybe some nutty white supremacy group they should be profiled too
Profiling should be limited to terror /mass shooting related crimes that are extremely serve and massive in scale. But it should apply to those crimes. This is common sense to anyone not PC
