Queens, NY – He probably didn’t get the can of soda, the pretzels, or the free pillow on this flight, but that’s the least of it.

A 21-year-old JetBlue employee rode from New York to Boston in an airplane’s cargo compartment, officials said today.

“Even after talking to him we were a little uncertain as to how it happened,” said David Procopio, a state police spokesman. “This may have been accidental.”

The man, whom police would not identify because he was not charged with a crime, was working in a cargo bin at JFK and somehow found himself stuck below the airplane, with the luggage, when the plane took off, Procopio said.

Panicked when he realized he was no longer on the ground, he phoned JetBlue officials from the air, he told state police.

A medical team evaluated the man after he landed at Logan International Airport and found no signs of injuries. The matter was turned over to JetBlue. In an e-mailed statement, JetBlue spokesman Bryan Baldwin said the company is investigating the incident, but would not confirm any details. Baldwin said the company only flies two types of aircraft, both of which have pressurized cargo holds.

Procopio said he did not know how the stowaway got back to New York.

    U/D:
It turns out that the 21-year-old employee took a nap.

Police say the JetBlue employee told them he fell asleep in the plane’s baggage compartment and got locked inside.

Thats hilarious. One, I hope he didn’t get hurt. It sounds like he didn’t. Two, I hope it wasn’t a prank.

So he called them when he realized he was no longer on the ground. Yet instead of returning to JFK immediately, they continued to Logan. I guess they didn’t want to inconvenience the customers.

I thought the cargo hold is typically NOT pressurized. It would seem he’s lucky he works for JetBlue.

I am sure this dumb idiot of an employee will get fired. the creep wanted to go to Boston. So much for security when nobody even realizes that someone who is supposed to be on a tarmac with special clearence is missing.

I assume that since the hold is pressurized they considered that there was no added risk to continuing for a short flight. They also had to consider that it might have been a prank call and not true.

A bit worrying from a security point of view, if a plane can take off with a person in the hold, and nobody has any idea he is there.

They should have fired him for sleeping on the job and fined him for using a celphone during flight. Because the the pressure capsule of commercial airlines are capsule shaped, (design requirement) the cargo hold is always pressurized. It is not always heated.
