These cases should be vigorously prosecuted and those who do this should be punished. There are terrible cases where bochurim upset with their rebbe put his or the rebbitzen’s name on these websites under listings for escort services and other nareshkeit and try to generate a flood of phone calls or order food from treife restaurants delivered to his home. The website themselves need to do a better job of monitoring the postings.

Why isn’t there a system to verify the identity of those placing an ad? Perhaps even if an ad is free, a credit card number should be required at the time the ad is submitted to at least be one step in verifying identity. If a phone number is placed within an ad, then the number should be called, and the text of the ad that was submitted be verified as another step to prove the ad is legitimate before it is posted. Perhaps other steps could also be put in place to verify the identity of the one who submitted the ad.

#1 and #2 are both nuts.

I appreciate the freedom that a company like Craigslist.com provides. There are ALWAYS ways to track IP addresses back to the source computer. If this is REALLY a problem, go after the bochurim who do it. They CAN catch them already if need be. However, you would have to go through the civil justice system to get a warrant for the information (I know that is unacceptable to some people around here, but that’s their choice). It is not the fault of Craigslist.com that some of its users are disrespectful morons.
