Mr Demjanjuk, 89, was flown to Germany on Tuesday from the United States, where he waged a long battle against deportation, partly on health grounds.

But a spokesman for Stadelheim jail in Munich said “doctors have determined he is fit to remain in custody”.
He faces charges of being an accessory to the deaths of 29,000 Jews.

The arrest warrant was read to him hours after his arrival in Germany.

His lawyer, Guenter Maull, said the suspect had sat in a chair while the 21-page warrant was read and translated into his native Ukrainian language.

Mr Demjanjuk “showed no emotion, with few facial movements” but had understood the charges, he said.
He denies accusations that he worked as a guard in the Sobibor Nazi death camp in Poland during World War II.

Mr Demjanjuk, who settled in the US in 1952, says he was captured by the Germans in his native Ukraine during the war and kept as a prisoner of war.

He is being kept under medical observation to allow experts to determine whether he is fit to go to trial – an assessment which may take weeks.

the article says Mr. Demanjuk showed no facial movements or expression which means he feels no remorse for the thousands of jews he killed which means he wasnt captured and taken as a prisoner and forced to do this evil deed

this is a very sensitive issue: however to me this whole thing is very silly. my grandparents were all in the war, but to be busy with this old guy and to try to put him in jail now, I just don’t see the whole big deal, who cares? let him die at home, he’s harmeless now. and its how many years later? who will have anything if he’s jailed?

I totally agree. The amount of Nazi’s that went to trial would be comical if it wasn’t so sad. Sitting in jail now is a joke it’s not what this guy deserves. He will get what he deserves when he dies. And for those of you that are gonna say that if we let them get away with it they’ll see they can do it again, you are kidding yourself 15-20 nazis that were caught is a joke compared to 6 million jews.

i think theres a difference of him losing his freedom or being put into a cell like a common criminal…he definately is hiding something.

This man should never have a moment of peace on this earth, no matter how little time he has left. If his death were to be so horribly painful that he dies terrified and alone in a state of nothing but the kind of sheer terror that none of us could possibly imagine… I would not feel even a second of rochmonus for him.
